Happy Fourth of July!

July 4, 2019

Today we celebrate the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776 and the birth of our nation — the United States of America!

“America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination, and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.” ~Harry S. Truman

Pledge

“The essence of America — that which really unites us — is not ethnicity, or nationality, or religion. It is an idea — and what an idea it is: that you can come from humble circumstances and do great things. That it doesn’t matter where you came from, but where you are going.” ~Condoleezza Rice

USA Flag with Fireworks

“One cannot be an American by going about saying that one is an American. It is necessary to feel America, like America, love America, and then work.” ~Georgia O’Keeffe

Yankee Doodle

“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” ~Erma Bombeck

Let's Celebrate

Time Management

kind of 4th border

What do you do when you’ve been on vacation whooping it up and realize when you return home there is a ton of things you need to do ASAP?

Two things:  Prioritize and Downsize

1) Prioritize

Empty refrigerator? Food is the sustenance of life. Grocery shop.

No clean clothes?  Hygiene is important. Wash those clothes!

Weekend guests? If you want to keep your friends close, tasty food and an orderly house are welcoming. Beer and wine help, too.

Grass too tall? Coming from corn country, there’s a saying “Knee-high by the Fourth of July.” That doesn’t apply to grass. Time to mow the lawn.

2) Downsize

Blog? As I prepare for family and friends, this is the downsized version of my Thursday blog.

Meanwhile, celebrate America and enjoy friends and family this July Fourth.

Celebrating With Family, Friends, and Food

July 9, 2015

“Laughter is brightest in the place where food is.” – Irish Proverb

Holidays are for family, friends, and food. That’s exactly how we spent our Fourth of July – with family and friends, enjoying a feast.

We began the day with a trip on a ferry that took us to Long Island. Our black jeep was the last one on. Yikes!

After warm greetings, the feast began.

To begin …

Oysters Rockefeller and Oysters Bienville

These oysters were harvested by our host, who created this delicious presentation on the half shell. Yum!

On to dinner …

perfectly grilled filet mignon with sides of corn, salad, red potatoes, and wine!

We ate outside on a glorious Independence Day, overlooking Long Island Sound. The combination of family, friends, food, and laughter made the day remarkable!

I’m beginning to compile a list of books for summer reading. They’re a combination of fiction/nonfiction from picture books to young adult. Then I’ll be off to the library.
