Reading Rocks!

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” ─ Dr. Seuss

The best thing about Read Across America Day on Wednesday was the silence – the silence that took place when everyone had a book in hand and was reading. It was mute music to my ears! It made my heart sing.

The next best thing of the day was the third grade rendition of “Gotta Keep Reading.” Enthusiasm from the performers permeated the room and mesmerized the audience. It was a perfect choice to share with others and a terrific way to get an important message across to younger listeners. Way to go third graders!

Lots of other good things happened that day, too. There were visits to the library in search of Dr. Seuss books and a chance to hold one of the Seuss wacky characters. There was that special look on students’ faces as they listened intently to a book being read by a “celebrity reader.” Then there were the smiles and the thanks when a Dr. Seuss bookmark was handed to students and a sticker was slapped on their chests. And how about the priceless reactions from kindergarteners when they saw green eggs and ham for lunch!

If you didn’t take part in the Read Across America celebration on March 2, make it a point to do so next year. It’s a day when everyone comes together for one purpose — to READ. What’s more important than that?
